In Windows 8, there is a secret menu which allows user quickly access system features such as Device Manager, Search, Event Viewer, Computer Management etc. To access the secret menu, you can right click on the bottom left corner of your screen or from the keyboard (virtual or physical one) press Win + X where Win is the Windows key. This is also called WinX Menu by many.

The question here is how to customize the items in the WinX menu? Vishal Guptas first introduced the method on his blog but it seems to be complicate and require changing core system files of Windows 8. You need to be a pro to follow the instructions. Rafael Rivera from Within Windows provided a more-simple way to do so. He explained the method clearly on his blog and this all about making the menu item correctly hashed.

This tutorial will show you step by step how to do it.
Note 1: Location of WinX Menu is at %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows\WinX

Note 2: There are 3 groups in the menu, separated by folders named Group1, Group2 and Group3. On the menu, these 3 groups are separated by a horizontal line. See screenshot for more information.

Step 1: Create a normal Shortcut

Right-click on the desktop, choose New and then Shortcut. In the shortcut location box, Enter location of the application and its arguments if there is any

Step 2: Download this file, unzip and copy to same location with your created shortcut.

http://www.windows8tricks.net/wp-content/uploads/apps/hashlnk_vs2010.zip

Step 3: Assign the shortcut a special hash data so it can be used in WinX menu.

Open command line, navigate to location of your shortcut and downloaded file. Enter hashlnk yourShortcutname.lnk

Step 4: Copy the hashed shortcut file to WinX Menu location as in Note 1 and 2.
